Biography

I grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada – a bit of a mouthful, I’ll admit. Now I live in Whitehorse, Yukon, the most northwesterly part of Canada.
Between those two places, I’ve lived in Ottawa, Winnipeg, Edmonton, and parts of Germany and England.
I earned two degrees in English, and promptly set out to make my living writing mainly about science and history. I’m still not sure if there’s a logical progression there!
I’ve worked as a radio copywriter, a reporter for newspapers and radio, a trade book editor, and a university instructor. I had a brief, inglorious stint as a government communications officer – and a longer, more useful spell as coordinator of a climate change research network. For most of my career, however, I’ve been a freelance writer, working in a variety of media.
Currently, I spend much of my time working on fiction and non-fiction for children and young adults.
My first kids’ science book, Super Crocs & Monster Wings: Modern Animals’ Ancient Past, was published by Annick Press in spring 2008. My first kids’ history book, Traitors’ Gate, and Other Doorways to the Past, also from Annick Press, came out that fall. In 2009, Annick Press published Spiked Scorpions & Walking Whales: Modern Animals, Ancient Animals, and Water. Watch for a new book, Lizards in the Sky: Animals Where You Least Expect Them, in September 2010.
I’ve also had several short stories published. Check the Fiction page for details. And I’m currently working on a couple of novels.
