I grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada – a bit of a mouthful, I admit. Now I live in Whitehorse, Yukon, the most northwesterly part of Canada. Between those two places, I’ve lived in Ottawa, Winnipeg, Edmonton, and parts of Germany and England.

After earning two degrees in English, I promptly set out to make my living by writing, mainly about science and history. I’m still not sure if there’s a logical progression there, but it's fun.

Over the years, I have worked as a radio copywriter, a reporter for newspapers and radio, a trade book editor, and a university instructor. I had a brief, inglorious stint as a government communications officer – and a longer, more useful spell as coordinator of a climate change research network. For most of my career, however, I’ve been a freelance writer, working in a variety of media and for a range of clients, from government to private business.

Currently, I spend much of my time writing fiction and non-fiction for children and young adults. I write books, short stories, novels, and magazine articles. Click the Non-fiction tab above for a list of my science and history books, as well as links to some magazine and newspaper articles. Click the Fiction tab for information about my stories, and a treat or maybe two.
